Longines holds the earliest recorded and continually used trademark on earth. A history ripe with counterfeiters and copycats from the brand's inception, Longines was forced to 'Bogart' (protect) their accomplishments.
1832: Longines was founded by Swiss watchmaker Auguste Agassiz in Saint Imier, Switzerland.
In the early 1850s, Agassiz hired his nephew, economist Ernest Francillon. Francillon, ambitious and motivated, purchases land near Saint-Imier in an area known as Les Longines (Long Meadows). With intentions of mechanizing watchmaking, Francillon prompted a large factory structure at Les Longines.
1867: The company underwent a name change to Longines.
1867: Francillon hired Jaques David, a talented engineer.
David attended Philadelphia's World's Fair, where he was inspired by American factory watchmaking. David wrote a groundbreaking report that reshaped the Swiss industry and proved to be a piotal point in Longine's history.
This report became the most influential document in horology.
1880: Inspired by David's insight from the World's Fair, Longines began making full in-house movements that were further refined through the use of hydroelectric technology. Longines' growth inspired many residents in Saint-Imier to leave their agricultural jobs for employment with Longines.
1867: In response to rampant couterfeiting, the brand creates their signature winged hourglass logo. Longines is forced to take measures to protect (Bogart) their reputation, including registering their logo and company name as well as etching every movement with the new logo.
1880: Longines files its name with World Intellectual Property Organization (W.I.P.O).
1889: Longines logo is registered with W.I.P.O
Credentials:
Up to the 1950s, Longines's reputation was built on aviation timepieces. The brand also had significant involvement in timing competitive sports.
Longines was the official timekeeper in the first Olympic Games of 1896 and continues to be the official timer of equestrian racing, tennis, and gymnastic events.
1927: A Longines timepiece is used by the famous pilot, Charles A. Lindberg to measure his continuous flight from New York to Paris.
1951: Longines solidifies their great reputation with timing the first the first Tour de France in 1951.
1950s: Longines promoted movie idols, Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn, as ambassadors of the brand. Bogart, an iconic stylish actor who was known for his dignified, masculine aura, and the constant cigarette he "bogarted." A stylish gentleman and tough guy sex symbol whom men wanted to emulate.

Check out the striking midnight blue gloss enamel dial, almost appearing black until the light catches it. Unfortunately, this piece was found without its original dial. To resurrect this timepiece, the upcycling process required refinishing a new one.

The Longines Bogart Line
The Longines logo is the oldest, continuous valid trademark in the International Registry at WIPO. From the inception of the brand, Longines always placed innovation as their vision, which resulted in 160 patents for watchmaking in Switzerland. Every watch produced by Longines since 1867 has been documented with its individual serial number, model, and whom purchased the timepiece. Protecting the reputation and the brand Longines built as well as the iconic status of precision, was of utmost importance.
We at Fusion Timepieces have aptly named our Longines line: The Bogart.
A company many attempted to copy, forcing the brand to register their trademark and inscribe each timepiece with the winged hourglass logo. Longines was not allowing anyone to reap benefits from their innovations, patents, and brand building and eventually was forced to bogart (exercise control or monopolize) their watchmaking accomplishments.

Bogart is slang taken from the last name of famous actor Humphrey Bogart, as he often kept a cigarette in the corner of his mouth outwardly never drawing on it, smoking or sharing it. The term 'bogart' became well used in the 1960's for anyone who protected something for oneself instead of sharing. The history of Longines was ripe with copy cats and counterfeiteres. Longines had no choice but to Bogart their accomplishments with an early logo in an effort to protect their name brand recognition.

Why we named it "Bogart"
The Bogart name originates from the famous American actor, Humpfrey Bogart. Bogart was well known for having a cigarette in his mouth on the "big screen" and never seemed to draw from it or share it with anyone. The common household phrase "Bogart" developed during the 1950's and continued through the decades. The term referred to anyone who didn't share. "Stop bogarting all that wine" or "Don't be a bogart and give me a drag of that cigarette" were common. Bogart is slang for monopolizing something and refers to anyone who felt justified in seemingly acting selfish with something others wanted. We all know of examples when an accomplishment was made, something won or awarded and people become jealous, envious and wanted to reap the benfits of your accomplishments.
Humphrey Bogart was an ambassadar for Longines during the 1950's.
The "Bogart" watch is dedicated to the accomplished indivdual whom others want to imitate or associate with, with the hopes of latching on to some of the benefits.
